Beethoven’s Trio for violin, viola and cello – one of three early trios -- begins with dramatic chords and shifts in harmony, followed by a songful 2nd movement and a bright scherzo. This work in four movements helped establish the string trio as capable of greater musical complexity and drama.

Francois Couperin (1668-1733) was court composer for Louis XIV. “Concerts” 13 and 9 for viola and cello are part of a series of graceful, light compositions by which Couperin sought to integrate the Italian and French Baroque styles. Kenji Bunch and Francis Rowell perform.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) Suite for two violins, cello, and piano (1930).
Korngold composed for ballets and operas performed in Vienna and also concert music, such as this late Romantic suite with rich musical textures and melodies. Immigrating to the US, he was celebrated for his film scores.
