Did you know
- Stormwater is estimated to contribute 50% of the phosphorus load in Lake Champlain
- Its estimated that 22% of phosphorus is from stream instability, 14% from development and paved roads, 6% Unpaved Roads, 15% forestry, 3% wastewater treatment and 40% agriculture
- It's estimated that that the Lake Champlain Basin is 3% Impervious surface which increases the amount and velocity of stormwater runoff which increases stream bank instability and contributes to erosion in our ditches. Of this 3%, only 1/10th of the area is currently under stormwater regulation, mainly in Chittenden County towns, St. Albans and Rutland City / Town.
- Vt Act 64 Passed in 2015 addresses water quality and may force municipalities to alter their stormwater infrastructure including ditching, culverts and catch basins to improve water quality.
- The town’s new stormwater regulations ask that new development which adds more than 10,000 square feet of new impervious surface (example: a home with 1000 square feet of roof coverage and 750 feet of 12 foot wide driveway) to have a professionally designed and implemented stormwater mitigation. This eases the burden and cost on our town infrastructure due to new development by preventing increased flows, protects our watershed and protects the development potential for down-watershed property owners.
Please vote “No” to repeal of these regulations. The vote is by Australian ballot, 7/28 at the Hinesburg Town Hall from 7am to 7pm.
