"The Historic Center of UVM" by UVM Professor Emeritus William Averyt

"This presentation covers the growth of UVM around the Green, from Ira Allen's early project to create a university for the Republic of Vermont in the 1780s, up to the present. We will look at some of the people who figured in UVM's development, including James Marsh, Justin Morrill, Frederick Billings, and John Dewey and also some of the lesser known connections to figures such as Coleridge, Emerson, Hawthorne, and Laurance Rockefeller. Some of the historic buildings will be discussed, including the long-disappeared President's House, Old Mill, the Catlin-Johnson House, the Billings Library, and Ira Allen Chapel."

Dr. Averyt retired effective June 1, 2006. His areas of interest include international trade and investment policy, information policy, and strategic management. He worked as an international consultant for major corporate and government clients of the US, Canada, West Europe, and Asia. He formerly worked as Director for International Trade for the National Association of Manufacturers, and was Vice President, International Business-Government Counselors, Inc. Dr. Averyt obtained his Ph.D. from Yale University.
