Help us read Frederick Douglass's stirring 1852 speech - "What to the American Slave is the 4th of July?" We'll gather at Rokeby Museum on Sunday, July 5 at 3 pm and give everyone a chance to read. Douglass was invited to give a speech commemorating the 4th of July, but chose instead to speak from the slave's point of view. And slaves certainly had no reason to celebrate liberty that did not apply to them. Ferrisburgh has the distinction of being one of the few places in Vermont that Douglass ever visited, so it's an appropriate spot for this annual event.
