BALE (Building A Local Economy) is opening a remarkable exhibition that showcases the eye-popping art of four indigenous artists from west central Mexico; José Benítez Sánchez, Guadalupe González Ríos, Juan Ríos Martínez, and Pablo Taizán de la Cruz, to be held at the Commons @ BALE (35 S. Windsor St.) in South Royalton on Friday, June 26 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
This extraordinary exhibit combines work from these world-renowned artists, with historical and contemporary photographs, music, and cultural artifacts to yield a stunning window into the cultural expression of three tribes of indigenous Mexicans, commonly referred to as the “Huichol” (or “Wixárika” in their native Nahuatl language). Dazzlingly colorful, religiously themed “yarn-paintings” by the artists dramatically illustrate the depth of Huichol spiritual culture and tradition, while displaying their uniquely individual but thoroughly contemporary artistic styles. All four artists have been exhibited to great critical acclaim in galleries and museums around the world.
The exhibit will remain at the Commons @ BALE until Labor Day. You are urged to call 802-498-8438 for specific viewing hours during the summer. Proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the Wixarika Foundation dedicated to Huichol Cultural Survival. For more information, contact Chris Wood at chris@balevt.org.
