Discuss New Vermont School Merger Law

Past event

Dear neighbors,

The Brewster Pierce school board is hosting an information/discussion session this Tuesday evening (June 23rd, 6:30) for an update on new Vermont legislation regarding school mergers. New requirements and timelines were recently established in the new Education Bill (Act 46) just a few weeks ago. We will talk about how this may affect Huntington. The goals for this meeting will be to explain the new requirements and options as well as the timelines we can consider for our school district. Our superintendent, John Alberghini, will be there to explain some of the legal details in the new law. After a presentation, we would like to engage in thoughtful unbiased Q and A and discussion. We look forward to sharing what we know and hearing what you think.

Brief background: For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the "merger issue": The 5 towns that make up our supervisory union (Huntington, Richmond, Bolton, Jericho and Underhill) voted in November 2014 to consider merging into one unified school district, with one school board for all 9 schools and all 5 towns. Huntington chose to retain its own school board for Brewster Pierce, and retain full ownership of its school building and full responsibility for its own budget and staffing. The other towns merged into what is now the Mt Mansfield Modified Union School District (MMMUSD). The MMMUSD governing board replaces the MMU school board along with 5 of the 6 elementary school boards. The 15 member board meets twice a month. Meetings are recorded and information is available at the CESU web site. (CESU is Chittenden East Supervisory Union).
