Magical realism/fantasy short film to be shot Aug 17th to Aug 23rd around Montpelier. This is my VCFA thesis film.
“Seven year old Joan sets to bring back her disappeared father, with help of her Owl Thing friend”.
There will be a formal casting date next week:

When: June Friday 19th. - 6pm to 9pm. and June Sunday 21st. - 11am to 2pm.
But if it's too far away or you can't make it please let me know and I'll hold a special audition in Montpelier.
Character Info:
Joan
Female, fictional 7 year old. Sits a lot in silence just watching her surroundings and constantly asks herself questions like: “are all ladybugs actually ladies?” or “why do we need money to buy things?” or “if plants need rain and sun to grow, and rainbows are made of light and water: are rainbows plant food?”. Talks to bugs and ‘saves’ them by taking them out of her house and putting them in her yard, or preventing caterpillars from being squashed on the road. Likes to draw and color a lot, but most of the time she’s running outside playing as if she was a character from a movie she saw on tv.
She thinks and observes a lot, but when she makes a decision she becomes a stubborn go-getter, even against her parent’s will.
Lucy
Female, fictional 24 year old. Being able to improvise a plus. Has been a full time mom since she got pregnant right after high school. Never worked. She’s stuck between two ideas: sometimes she urges to go to college, and also wants to have another child. Her moody personality is directly related to the amount of cash she has at hand to run the house. Enjoys falling asleep while reading and having the tv on. She has a recurring dream of her own mother pointing her index finger at her and saying “I told you, I told you” or her mother sewing her dress while telling her “you’re not going, I’m doing it but you’re not going”.
She has a tendency to blame other’s about her shortcomings but strongly refrains from saying a word because she deeply knows they are not responsible at all. Or are they?
Derek
Male, fictional 28 year old. Being able to improvise a plus. Decided to enlist in the army when found out Lucy was pregnant. The military gave him structure and responsibility, traits he didn’t have at all before joining. While at home he enjoys taking care of his property: the barn, the field, the house and having long conversations with Joan. He fights with Lucy because she wants him to leave the army. Actually, he realizes he’s been fighting with Lucy for a lot of reasons for the past two years. While having a beer, alone, he has found himself thinking that only reason why he’s still with Lucy is because of Joan: “Maybe it would be better for her if we would split. I love her but it’s not working anymore. All this fighting. She never worked in her life, what’d she do if left?”.
Has a constant struggle between duty and responsibility and what he would like to do.
Charon
Male. He’s death itself, carrying souls across Styx into the underworld. Should be skinny as a skeleton. Must know how to drive and have a valid driver’s license. No dialogue lines.
Keeper
Female. Mystical crone looking. She’s the queen of the underworld, keeper of infinite knowledge. Some would say ‘the Goddess’. Offers what everyone needs although almost no one takes it because it’s not what they want.
Captain
Male, fictional 35 year old. Police/Military looking. No dialogue lines.
The Owl Thing
Male/Female. Preferably a tall, stocky person. Must have some training in body work: dancer, theater, performer as will be wearing a costume and incarnating a mythical creature. No dialogue lines, should express through subtle body movements.
