Again, as with the Paddle the Border, I will let the more talented people in the Chamber tell you about the Tour:-
The Cohase Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce its 4th Annual Garden Tour on Sunday, June 21st from 11AM-3PM. In addition to lovely perennial gardens at private homes, this year’s tour will feature something special for history and art lovers, as well as contemporary wine enthusiasts!
The “Moses Kent Farm” on the border of Orford and Lyme’s scenic River Road, owned by Tim and Lynn Cook, will open both the gardens and home to the public. The 1811 Federal home is on the National Historic register and features several rooms with hand-painted murals by important American itinerant artist Rufus Porter, painted circa 1825-1830. Rufus Porter decorated houses in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont between ca. 1825 and 1845. In addition to painting, he was a prolific and imaginative inventor. A journalist, editor and publisher, he founded one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the United States, The Scientific American. In a peaceful setting along River Road, this distinctive property also has lovely landscaping and gardens, with perennials and vegetables in one area, and a unique sunken garden designed by well-known Vt Garden designer, Gordon Hayward.
Did you know that delicious wine could be produced right here in the Upper Valley? Also featured on this year’s tour is the “3 Sisters Winery” in Bradford, VT. The 3 Sisters Winery was planted about 10 years ago in the rolling, high hills surrounding Bradford and is now producing delicious wine for sale. Come learn about the challenges of planting grapevines in this area from the Hanzas/Copeland family, and taste the results!
The extensive gardens at Lake Morey Resort are again the kicking-off point for the tour, and the site of an Afternoon Tea (included in the ticket price of $20 pp) Sunday afternoon from 1-3 PM. This year, Sally, one of the Resort’s gardeners will be giving guided tours of the lush, ever-growing gardens at 12 Noon and 2 PM, so be sure to time your tour so you can join us for at least one session! Tickets go on sale starting at 10:45 AM, and tour goers can follow the detailed map to all the gardens at their own pace. In addition to the above places, visitors can also enjoy the lovely gardens surrounding a private (but centrally located) contemporary home in Newbury, and another in Piermont that has been transformed from a completely wooded lot to an open and sunny yard with flowers, veggies, and pond, over the past 28 years.
