Vermont Folklife Center presents /Discovering Communities: Storytelling by Young Vermonters
On Friday, June 12th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm the Vermont Folklife Center will host an opening reception for “Discovering Community,” a photo, audio, and film documentary exhibition showcasing the stories produced by young Vermonters at the Center’s Vision and Voice Gallery and Documentary Workspace in Middlebury, VT. The exhibition is currently open to the public and will be on display through July 18^th , 2015.
/Discovering Community /proudly presents a showcase of documentary media work produced during classes, workshops, and after-school programs at schools and non-profit organizations around Vermont—and beyond.
Undertaken in partnership with the Vermont Folklife Center’s educational outreach staff, the array of projects in Vermont range from documentary films and photography made by high school students, to maps and place-based artwork by elementary school students. Stories gathered by youth nationally and internationally enter the conversation through our working partnerships with the World Story Exchange, Conversations from the Open Road, Stories of Hope, and the Freedom and Unity project.
As media instructor and exhibit curator Scott Miller observes, “This is an exciting time in history to be teaching the production of documentary media – recording technology has become accessible, ushering in an age of democracy in terms of whose stories are told and who creates the content. We are all richer as an audience learning from the expanding archive of human experiences recorded with creativity and honesty.”
The Discovering Community Educational Outreach Program works with educators and students to design place-based learning experiences that get students out of their classrooms to explore their communities using media-making tools to document and ultimately share their experiences with others. We celebrate their accomplishments with this unique exhibition—providing an opportunity to showcase their work and learn from their insightful and creative personal/community explorations.
The Vision & Voice Gallery and Workspace is ADA accessible on the main floor of the Vermont Folklife Center headquarters building at 88 Main Street in Middlebury. Gallery hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. For more information on the exhibit contact the Center at (802) 388-4964 or visit www.vermontfolklifecenter.org .
The Vermont Folklife Center's mission is to broaden, strengthen, and deepen our understanding of Vermont and the surrounding region; to assure a repository for our collective cultural memory; and to strengthen communities by building connections among the diverse peoples of Vermont.
