Relocalizing Vermont: Worker Co-Ops in Vermont

Past event
Jun 4, 2015

9:00 - 10:00 am
What if more workers owned the businesses they worked at? Worker coops can mean that ordinary workers build equity in the company they work for--and so greater economic equality could be a result. That's just one of the benefits of worker coops that participants touted at a conference in Burlington Tuesday put on by the Vermont Employee Ownership Center.

It may be easier than you think to start a new business as a workers coop or turn an existing business into one, as more people are learning. At Tuesday's conference, I heard stories I have been asked not to tell you yet, about companies in transition or exploring transition to worker ownership. There's a private school in a major Vermont city. An organic farm beloved to many of our listeners. A prominent renewable energy company. I hope to bring some or all of these stories to Relocalizing Vermont in the weeks or months to come.

Today, there are plenty of interesting stories I _am_ allowed to tell about worker coops. A Randolph-based computer company has passed into the hands of its employees; we'll hear from general manager Ian Stewart. The Cooperative Fund of New England is celebrating 40 years of promoting cooperatives; board president Don Kreis will tell us where they fit into the cooperative economy. And Don Jamison, who organized Tuesday's conference, will give us an overview of the state of worker coops in Vermont.

10:00 - 10:30 am
Resilience Thoughts, Bucky Buckaw's Backyard Chicken Broadcast, plus upcoming events related to energy, food, and the local economy at the end of the age of oil.
