Gamelan Sulukala in Concert

Past event
Jun 21, 2015, 4 AM to 5:30 PM

The Goddard Gamelan Sulukala is pleased to announce a public performance at the
Plainfield, VT Opera House on US Rt. 2 in Plainfield on Sunday, June 21 at 4:00 pm.
Javanese Gamelan is a group - or orchestra - of about 30 instruments ranging from
huge gongs to tiny flutes with lots of xylophone and kettle type instruments in
between.
Gamelan has a long history in central Vermont going back to the late 1960’s when
Dennis Murphy built the first gamelan anywhere in the world outside of Java at
Goddard College. Gamelan Sulukala (named in honor of a Murphy composition) was
purchased anonymously for Goddard in the 90’s. Made in Java, it is a full complement
of instruments fashioned from bronze and iron. Currently it is being played by a
community group of 17 members who range in age from their 20’s to 70’s with every
decade in-between represented. Some of your Woodbury, Calais, Marshfield and Plainfield
neighbors are in this merry band!
Javanese music is very pleasing to listen to and this concert will feature a wide
variety of music ranging from traditional Javanese pieces - both slow and fast, to
more contemporary compositions written by Murphy and other American gamelan
composers even including a piece in ragtime style.
Donations will be accepted at the door to benefit the Plainfield Opera House fund.
Please come to this rare and exciting event, help us spread the word, and bring your
family and friends.
