The Essex Conservation Committee and Chittenden County Forester Keith Thompson invite you learn about the State of Vermont’s Use Value Appraisal Program at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 6. UVA programs encourage the continuation of Vermont's working lands by appraising property values based on the production of wood or food, rather than its commercial or residential development value. Property owners with parcels larger than 25 acres may be eligible to participate in Use Value Appraisal and significantly reduce their property taxes.
The state offers two types of UVA programs: forestry and agriculture. Land enrolled in agricultural UVA must be actively used for farming. Participation in the forestry program requires landowners to actively manage for sawtimber and care for their forest while meeting some eligibility requirements. UVA programs require long-term commitments from landowners. Early withdrawal from the program or a failure to adhere to a management plan results in tax penalties.
By visiting a UVA property on Pettingill Road on June 6, you can walk through a recent timber harvest, learn about forest management, and ask questions about your own land. The tour will begin at 9 a.m., rain or shine, and should last for approximately two hours. Wear a good pair of walking or hiking shoes. We’ll meet in the field on the south side of the Pettingill Road, 0.4 miles off of VT Route 128.
