RC Sailing Races

This year, the Annual Green Mountain Regatta run by the Stowe Yacht Club will be hosting races in two classes of radio controlled (RC) sailboats.

RC Sailing uses no motors, just the sails and the wind to move. All racing is conducted under the International Rules of Racing. Races will run throughout the day, ending late afternoon. Participants will be from Stowe, Vermont, New England and as far away as Chicago.

J Boats: Friday June 5th staring at 10 am at the Waterbury Reservoir State Park just off Rte 100 in Waterbury Center.
These boats are scale models (1/16th) of the classic America’s Cup contenders that raced in the 1930’s; Shamrock V, Endeavor, Whirlwind & Ranger. J Boats back then ran up to 135 in length and took a crew of 35 to handle. The RC J Boats are the largest boats of the many classes of sailboats raced in American Model Yacht Association (AMYA). The J’s run up to 8.5 feet in length, 9.5 ft feet in mast height, weigh 65-90 lbs, and carry 3000-4000 sq. in. of sail. These beautiful boats are fun to watch displaying the power and graciousness of sail.

EC-12; Sat & Sun, June 6th & 7th starting at 10 am on the pond behind the Commodore Inn on Rte 100 in Stowe.
The East Coast 12 Meter (EC-12) also raced in the America’s Cup when the rules specified the boats be 12 meters. The RC EC-12 ‘s hull was actually the tow tank hull used to develop the full sized racers. The RC EC-12’s run about 5 ft in length, mast height 6 ft, carry 1300 sq. in. of sail, and weigh about 23 lbs. This AMYA sailing class is one of the largest member classes with RC clubs all over the country.

The Stowe Yacht Club has informal racing every Monday and Wednesdays on the pond behind the Commodore Inn starting at 5pm, June through September. New comers are always welcome. The entry level RC sailboat the club uses is a model of a Soling ( 39 in long and weighs about 10 lbs.). It is a one design so the boats are all the same and not expensive.
