Presentation: 1957 Airplane Crash Site Rediscovery, 50 Years Later

Past event
Jun 4, 2015, 6 to 8 PM

The Castleton Historical Society presents a pictorial & narrative program of a 1957 Army airplane crash in the mountains of Chittenden, and the unconventional methods it took to relocate the crash site over 50 years later. Bill Powers, Rutland historian and author, is the presenter.

On October 2, 1957, an Army aircraft, Beaver L-20, carrying four army officers departed New York City, bound for Burlington, Vermont. Due to inclement weather, the plane veered from its intended route and crashed in Chittenden. After extensive searching, the crash site was found, 10 days later; there were no survivors.

50 years later, the family sought answers as to where their father/grandfather had died. The program details the quest and efforts to locate a long lost crash site.

Thursday, June 4th, 6 PM, Castleton Community Center. All are welcome to this free, handicapped accessible program. Refreshments. Questions? Call Holly Hitchcock, 468-5105.
