The Ohavi Zedek Social Action Committee will launch a year-long effort to explore and act on issues of aging – not just for seniors, but for younger adults with aging loved ones, for parents raising children while also caring for aging parents, and for seniors themselves. Given the demographics of our community, we invite the OZ congregation and community-at-large to join together as we seek a deeper understanding of the issues of our aging society and, close to home, how these issues truly affect each of us and our families.
Guest speaker Jim Leddy will help us launch this initiative on June 18 at a special Lunch & Learn from 12:00 to 1:15 pm in the OZ Social Hall. Jim is an outstanding leader in our community, having recently completed a six-year term as Vermont State President of AARP. Jim was a State Senator from Chittenden County and selected by his peers to chair the Senate
Health and Welfare Committee. He served twenty years in the role of executive director of the Howard Center. Jim grew up across the street from Ohavi Zedek in a large Burlington family, and enthusiastically accepted our invitation to help us engage all of you on this topic.
As we welcome Jim Leddy’s perspective and knowledge of aging issues, we also will be asking for your participation. Social Action Committee members will be at each table to listen to your questions and encourage you to write down what you most want us to focus on during the coming year, what will make a difference in your quality of life as you and your loved ones advance in age. We want to find ways to develop programs that meet the needs of the congregation as well as the broader community, of which we are a microcosm in terms of the issues of aging.
Lunch & Learn is free and open to the public. Donations are greatly appreciated and welcome. Ohavi Zedek is located at 188 North Prospect St. in Burlington.
