Bury Cancer Survivorship Celebration
As part of honoring National Cancer Survivorship Day, Barre will feature the “Bury Cancer Survivorship Celebration Parade” on Saturday, June 6th. This is a day of celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families and friends, and an outreach to the community.
A symbolic focal point of the parade is a white marble headstone with a lavender ribbon etched above the word "Cancer". An estimated birthdate of 3,000 B.C., an open-ended death date, and an inspiring quote from Stuart Scott, the ESPN sportscaster who died this year from appendiceal cancer, are also etched on the stone. “You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live," Scott said during an awards ceremony last year honoring him for the way he did all three.
The “Bury Cancer Survivorship Celebration Parade”, including floats and walkers, will move through the downtown of Barre starting at 1:00 p.m. Other featured events include: a 5k run/walk sponsored by The Gym for Women, music by Vermont singer/songwriter Patrick Fitzsimmons, a dinner and Bogle wine pairing and auction sponsored by Calmont Beverage, and a night time light show in City Park.
There are 30,000 cancer survivors in Vermont. Cancer affects everyone - family, friends, co-workers, employers and community. As devastating as a cancer diagnosis can be, life after a cancer diagnosis can also be fruitful, rewarding, and even inspiring.
The event will benefit the Vermont Cancer Survivor Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for anyone dealing with cancer. www.vcsn.net VCSN provides programs of support, information and education, celebrates cancer survivorship, advocates for cancer survivors and collaborates with related institutions and organizations. Featured programs include: Kindred Connections, a one-on-one support for people going through cancer, and a “Sally Fox Memorial” Gas Card fund to ease the cost of transportation to and from cancer related appointments.
