SAVE THE DATE: Vince Brennan and I will be hosting another coffee hour at Nunyuns. Please join us on Saturday, September 14, 12:30-2:00 to discuss whatever is on your mind. Below are some highlights of the City Council work that I am currently involved in.

Redistricting survey
The City Council anticipates voting on a new redistricting plan at our September 23 meeting. We are interested in getting information for all of you via survey monkey. Please spread the word about this on facebook or any other social outreach you use. Once City Council approves a map, it will then be presented to the voters next March for 2/3s approval. From there it goes to the State Legislature for ratification.

F35s
I am cosponsoring a resolution opposing the housing of the F35s at our airport. This resolution will be voted on at our October 7 meeting. Leading up to that we will be working hard to educate the public and other city councilors about the facts of the F35s (incredibly high crash rate, housing value decrease, housing crunch in Burlington likely exacerbated, no increased jobs, no risk of the National Guard shutting down, potential cognitive impairment in children from the noise, increased cardiovascular disease, making us all into human targets, and more). If you are interested in getting more information about this and/or helping with the campaign, please let me know.

Guns
The Charter Change Committee has drafted five resolutions that seek to increase gun safety. These will be presented to the City Council on October 21. Like the redistricting work, if some or all of these pass the City Council vote, they will then go to the voters followed by the legislature. The measures include an assault weapon and high-capacity magazine clip ban (with a generous exemption for currently owned ones), a ban on guns from bars, mandated safe storage, a mechanism for the police to seize firearms in the situation of domestic violence risk, and mandates that people get a permit to carry concealed.

As always, be in touch if you have question or ideas about these measure or others.

Best,
Rachel Siegel
