Silver St Rain Garden Update
Although we have not had much rain this spring the rain garden is performing as designed. In the few heavy downpours that we have had the basins filled up and then allowed the water to filter through the stone dams and down into the LaPlatte. The plants use the nutrients (phosphorus) that is in the stormwater thereby reducing the amount entering the LaPlatte River and Lake Champlain.
Most of the plants survived although the long cold winter has inhibited the growth on some of the shrubs and the landscape contractor will be replacing dead perennials. The marsh marigolds are blooming and there will be milk weed, iris, asters and a dozen other native species that create a diverse environment for a variety of wildlife including a family of killdeer that begin their lives on the gravel roof of HInesburg Community School.
The black pipes are still in place as part of the irrigation system and will need to remain throughout the summer to insure that the plants can get established . Once the perennials have grown a good root system they will fill in the area so we won't see so much mud, this may take a few years.
There will be a tour of the Rain Garden at 6:30pm on June 9 to describe how it works and what the plants are. Meet in the lower parking lot off Silver Street
