THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST

Rick Winston has presented two previous film discussions at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington which were very popular with the audience. He returns on Sunday, June 7th, at 2 pm to present The Hollywood Blacklist as part of the "Sunday Afternoon at the Library" series.

In the late 1940s and through the early 1960s, many screenwriters, directors and actors were victims of the 'Red Scare'. They were rendered unemployable due to their refusal to testify before Congressional committees, or for refusal to inform on others. Wilson will explore the origins of the blacklist in Hollywood's labor unrest, what led to its ultimate end and show clips from films that were affected by the fear that consumed Hollywood, including HIGH NOON, ON THE WATERFRONT, and SALT OF THE EARTH.

Rick Winston was the co-owner of Montpelier's Savoy Theater for twenty-nine years, and has been the Programming Director for the Green Mountain Film Festival for the past 14 years. He has taught film history at Burlington College, Community College of Vermont, Goddard Collage, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and has made presentations throughout Vermont on film history.

The free program is presented by the Vermont Humanities Council. For more information contact The Martha Canfield Library, 528 E. Arlington Rd, Arlington or call 375-6153
