The Haynes House of Hope, a comfort care home for the terminally ill, announces its Spring Volunteer Drive,
Monday, June 1, and continue through Tuesday, June 30.
Current volunteers and staff members will be available to give tours of the home and talk about the volunteer process.
There are many areas in which someone can help at the Haynes House. Some of these are gardening and lawn care, cooking/baking, fund-raising, publicity, cleaning, etc.
However, the most important area of volunteering is resident care. The main job of a “hands-on” volunteer is to tend to the needs and request of the resident. Many residents enjoy the company of the volunteers by chatting with them, watching TV, etc. Volunteers will fix a snack or a meal, adjust the bed or bedding, give a back rub, or assist the resident in or out of bed. At times, a volunteer may need to assist the resident in per-sonal care. Volunteers are not asked to perform a task that is out of their comfort zone.
Before you begin, volunteers will be trained by a current volunteer or staff member. Also, volunteers may shadow someone for a shift or two before they take a shift on their own. There are no medical procedures involved in taking care of a resident.
Shifts are normally 4 hours, but they can be adjusted to fit your schedule. Many people sign up for one shift a week, but some do several, and others, once or twice a month. Each shift filled is a valuable contribution to the care of our residents. If you wish to be paired with another volunteer, that can be arranged. Several of our volunteers work shifts with friends or spouses.
Children over the age of 12 may volunteer with a parent or sibling 18 or over. There is no upper age limit for volunteers. We do ask that volunteers be physically able to help with moving/lifting residents. If you have a physical limitation, we can pair you with someone else for your shift. There are many ways to take care of the residents’ needs!
If the resident is sleeping, there are other tasks to do around the house. Each shift has a short list of house-keeping jobs that can be done if the resident is sleeping or having visitors.
Anyone who is interested in volunteering may call 518-642-8155 to arrange for a visit.
If you are driving by and see the “OPEN FOR TOURS” sign in front of the house, please stop in!
The Haynes House is located at 7187 State Route 149, Granville.
