Free Library Fun This Week

There are a couple free awesome events at the Johnson Public Library this week that your kids will not want to miss!
Tuesday from 2:45-4:15 the Tinkerlab club will meet. This is a spectacular club that nurtures our town's young makers, and since it will be the last Tinkerlab meeting until after summer vacation, the plan for this week is especially special.
For all those techie-types, inventors, and otherwise curious kids, you will be excited to hear that the library now owns it's very own Arduino! What's an Arduino, you say?? An Arduino is an open-source platform used for building electronics projects. Arduino consists of both a physical programmable circuit board (often referred to as a microcontroller) and a piece of software, or IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that runs on your computer, used to write and upload computer code to the physical board. I know, it sounds complicated, but think of it like a tiny brain for robots, sensors, or other electronics projects that connect to the real world. This week, the kids will get an introduction to the limitless possibilities of our new little brain-board by writing some simple code, and building our first project: a precisely controllable stroboscope (or strobe light). For any kids that show up who are not interested in the Arduino (there will probably be more than a few quiet moments of scratching our heads and reading instructions), a second exciting project will be available where we will disassemble (and dismember) several talking/singing/yapping toys and stuffed animals and use the parts for making new, strange creations.
And later in the week on Friday from 3-4:30, kids will get an introduction to our fascinating world through the purpose and history of Map Making! We will look at all kinds of maps and globes, and then begin a creative map making project of our own. Maybe it'll be a treasure map, a map of their messy room, or a secret map to a hidden, magical world... There are many places in need of a map!

Snacks will be provided as always, and all are welcome.
See you at the library!
