The Plainfield Opera House

Children of Paradise (Les Enfants du Paradis) is a classic romantic drama depicting the life of 19th century mime Baptiste Debureau and his love for a famous Parisian courtesan. The 1942 film, on many critic’s list as the best French film of all time, is an epic 3 hours and features a memorably moving performance by Jean-Lous Barrault as the lead character Baptiste, and Etienne Decroux as his father.

Rob Mermin will lead a discussion with emphasis on the influence of the film on Marceau and the development of mime in the 20th century.Mermin studied with Etienne Decroux (Baptiste’s father in the film) and Marcel Marceau.
