The Friends of Lakeview Cemetery are opening the historic Louisa Howard Chapel (455 North Avenue) to the public from 11 AM - 3 PM on Saturday, May 23rd. Restored to its 1882 High-Gothic Victorian splendor, the non-denominational chapel is owned by the City of Burlington and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
As part of the Friends’ Memorial Day Chapel Opening, a Civil War Cemetery Walking tour will also be held at 1 PM. Join local historians for a walk through Burlington's Lakeview Cemetery, and learn about the Civil War generals and soldiers buried in the city's only Victorian Park Cemetery. Included will be a stop at the gravesites of members of the Massachusetts 54th, the nation's first all black volunteer company, and who's story was told in the movie Glory. Walk will be held rain or shine. Both events are Free (donations welcome). Questions: 863-2075.
