This is a classic romantic drama depicting the life of 19th century mime Baptiste Debureau and his love for a famous Parisian courtesan. The 1942 film, on many critic’s list as the best French film of all time, is an epic 2 hours and 40 minutes and features a memorably moving performance by Jean-Lous Barrault as the lead character Baptiste, and Etienne Decroux as his father.
Mermin will lead a discussion with emphasis on the influence of the film on Marceau and the development of mime in the 20th century.
