Stormwater Runoff what you can do at home, and info about Potential Smilie School Stormwater Mitigation Projects!

Stormwater runoff from developed land is one of the major threats to the health of our streams and rivers as well as Lake Champlain. Stormwater is a problem for two reasons. One is volume—rapid runoff causes localized flooding and erodes and destabilizes stream channels. The other is that is carries pollutants to the streams such as phosphorus (the major contributor to algae blooms in Lake Champlain), bacteria, hydrocarbons and more.

The Friends of the Winooski River, the Bolton Conservation Commission and the Smilie School invite you to a program on May 18th at 6:30 PM at the Smilie School to learn more about the stormwater runoff issue. There will be an emphasis on what individual landowners can do to control runoff from their property. We will also tour the Smilie School property and discuss recommendations for that property. These recommendations were made by a team of Norwich University engineering students, who conducted an evaluation of the Smilie School property in the fall of 2014. The Friends hope to work with the Smilie School to implement some or all of these recommendations and to utilize them as education tools with the students.

An RSVP to the Friends at info@winooskiriver.org or 882-8276 is appreciated but not required.
