Hinesburg is poised to take a major leap with new zoning rules to govern stormwater and erosion control in new development. Under the new rules, small to mid-size building projects that create 10,000+ square feet of impervious surface (e.g., driveway, building, parking) will require a stormwater control system designed by a licensed engineer. Rather than invent our own system and standards, the new rules largely rely on existing State stormwater and erosion control standards. The biggest difference is that instead of using the State's one acre trigger (new impervious or disturbed soil) to require compliance with the standards, the new Hinesburg rules would lower the trigger to about a quarter acre (i.e., 10,000 square feet). Is 10,000 square feet a lot or a little? It is about the size of the 31-car main parking lot behind the Town Office.
The last chance for input is Monday, May 18. The Selectboard is holding a public hearing at 7pm. Thanks to everyone who already provided input over the last two years while the Planning Commission was working on the proposal! Curious? Want to check out the proposal or learn why we spent two years working on this? Head to the stormwater management page on the Town website at http://www.hinesburg.org/stormwater/
