LIVING ROOFS: THE NEXT FRONTIER IN GREENING OUR COMMUNITY!
Wednesday, May 13 6:30-7:30
at the Fletcher Free Library Pickering Room.
(presented by Beth Haggart)
Beginning with a brief visual history of Green Roofs around the world, Beth will show images of many types of contemporary Green or Living Roofs being built around the world today.
The focus of the presentation will be about small scale, lightweight green roofing that can be used on homes, porches, garages, chicken coops, and sheds. Most of the examples to be shown are owner built and designed. They are a delightful, functional and an ecologically healing addition to any home or garden.
A Living Roof filters pollutants out of rainwater and slows runoff, reduces energy costs by providing natural insulation and cooling, recreates natural habitats taken by building footprints, attracts insects and birds and can provide wildlife habitat.
Beth recently became certified as a Green Roof Professional through the non-profit organization Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, Toronto, Canada.
