Streamside Tree Planting at Crossett Brook Middle School

Past event
May 11, 2015, 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Please join the Friends of the Winooski River and students from Crossett Brook Middle School on May 11 and 12 to plant trees and shrubs along the brook on the school property. We will start each day at about 9:15. We will end at about 1:30 on the 11th and by 12:15 on the 12th. Advance notice to info@winooskiriver.org is greatly appreciated but not necessary.

There are many benefits to health riparian buffers. Buffers improve water quality by preventing sediment, nitrogen, phosphorus, pesticides and other pollutants from reaching a stream. Woody vegetation with deep roots helps to hold soil in place and reduce erosion. Riparian vegetation slows floodwaters, thereby helping to maintain stable streambanks and protect downstream property. Riparian vegetation allows water to soak into the ground and recharge groundwater. Riparian vegetation is a major source of energy and nutrients for stream communities. Overhanging riparian vegetation keeps streams cool, this is especially important for trout populations. Riparian buffers provide valuable habitat for wildlife.

What to Wear/ Bring: Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes. Be prepared for inclement weather - we plant in the rain! If you have a shovel and gloves bring them. We also have some to use.

Funding is provided by the US Fish and Widlife Service (Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program) and the State of Vermont Ecosystem Restoration Program.
