April Stools' Day 4/22/15 at Oakledge Park
Have you noticed more pet waste in your neighborhood now that the snow has melted? Join the Lake Champlain Committee (LCC) in an Earth Day Clean-up at Oakledge Park and nearby sidewalks and trails from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 22. Meet for "doo-ty" in the park's lower parking lot at the end of Flynn Ave.
Clean up supplies will be provided including gloves, bags, pails and hand sanitizer. Participants will receive a package of lake note cards (first come/first serve) and be entered into a drawing for cash prizes. After clean up there will be light refreshments at the LCC office (a short stroll from the park) courtesy of Myer's Bagel Bakery. RSVPs are encouraged to ensure we have enough supplies: (802) 658-1414 or lcc@lakechamplaincommittee.org.
The Scoop on Dog Poop:
The natural ecosystem can handle two dogs per square mile. The average urban area has 125 dogs per square mile. Besides the foul smell and the unpleasantness of stepping in hound mounds, pet poop is bad for people and waterways. It adds harmful bacteria that can make people sick as well as excess nutrients that cause algae blooms (some of which can turn toxic) and rob the water of oxygen needed for fish and other aquatic life. Dog waste contains 23-million fecal coliform bacteria per gram, ten times more per pound of body weight than even cows produce. Nearly 200,000 people rely on Lake Champlain for their drinking water.
Other Clean-ups:
LCC will be hosting other April Stools' Days on Saturday 4/25 and Scoop the Poop events in May. Contact us at lcc@lakechamplaincommittee.org for details. If you're unable to attend you can still lend a hand. Head out to your favorite park, trail or neighborhood with gloves, plastic bags and a sturdy trowel and help scoop the poop. Wear a safety vest if working near roadways. Pet poop should be flushed down the toilet or deposited in the garbage along with any other trash you find during your outings.
