Free Talk at Refuge Visitor's Center

Past event
Apr 24, 2015, 6:30 to 8:30 PM

Join Professor Fred Wiseman as he discusses his search for archaeological and historic evidence of Abenaki agricultural ritual, and the complex process of converting this diverse wealth of scholarly information into the beautiful clothing, musical instruments, ceremonial accessories, staging/settings, music and choreography that are used today by Vermont's and New Hampshire's Native People. He will focus on the critical anthropological concept of ethnic identity and the issues involved with cultural revitalization such as ethnic engineering, cultural authenticity, political sovereignty and Indigenous intellectual property rights. This illustrated presentation will be supplemented by examples of regalia and ceremonial equipage, as well as music, video and slides. Discussion will follow the presentation.
