The Monkton School Board has prepared a new budget, and voting will occur on April 14th at the Monkton Central School gym 7am-7pm. The total budget amount is very similar to the initial defeated budget, decreasing by $200 to $2,816,780. The key changes in this budget versus the defeated budget include changes to the proposed staffing and reductions in other areas.
The proposed staffing changes include funding a ninth classroom teacher to reduce projected class sizes at the 5/6 level, adding one day per week to the school counselor, and returning a half time support staff for general education needs including the K-2 literacy program. The budget still increases the nurse to full time. The Behavior Support Specialist position has been removed.
To achieve these staffing changes without raising the total budget, there are reductions in other areas. These reductions include a decrease in the SU assessment due to a reduced SU budget. In addition, we have reduced planned expenditures for furniture, buildings and grounds, sinking fund contribution, and consumables. Specifically, the purchase of some math curriculum may be delayed, as well as the full library odor remediation project and the purchase of some specialized playground equipment.
The Board will present additional information about the budget and answer questions on Monday April 13that 7pm in the MCS gym.
