Learn the basics of traditional rug hooking from start to finish with expert rug hooker, Carolyn Buttolph. The class will run on Wednesdays for 4 weeks beginning April 29th until May 20th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Traditional rug hooking consists of woven wool fabric that is cut into narrow strips. With a hand-held hook (similar to a crochet hook) you pull the narrow strips into loops through a woven linen foundation. Using colors of your choice, you outline and fill in the shapes to make your hooked rug.
A small hooked rug, which participants can complete over the four weeks, may be suitable for use as a chair mat, table decoration or wall hanging. Tools and materials needed will be available at the class, but participants are asked to bring a pair of sewing scissors if you have them.
Class is limited to 10 participants and registration in advance is required. To register, or for more information, please call Carolyn Buttolph directly at 888-8432. You can also call the Lanpher Library 888-4628. For images of hooked rugs, please visit the Lanpher Library website: lanpherlibrary.org and look at our Calendar of Programs and Events page.
There is no fee for the class, but you must purchase your own tools and supplies. Carolyn will supply these: Rug Hooks $10, Embroidery hoops $5, Patterns: from $5-$30. Wool fabric as needed for your pattern, approximately $5 and up.
