North Hero Service Learning Supports Camp Ta-Kum-Ta

Every year the 5 & 6 graders at North Hero School take part in a service learning project. At the beginning of the year they learn about local charities and the good they do in their community. The children then write persuasive essays and conduct a debate to choose a charity for their class to support. They spend the remainder of the year hosting events to raise awareness and money to send to their chosen organization.
Last year a spaghetti dinner was held in support of the Children’s Hospital. At the last school board meeting the principal, Joe Resteghini, stated this was the “largest event with by far the biggest turn out of community we had all year.” Despite the planning and calculating that happened before the event, the class was overwhelmed with the community response. (Thank you, Community!) Momentary food shortages resulted, confusion over where to sit and some delays in service resulted. The kids were frazzled, the chef was stressed. But the next day when the coffers were counted there was a smile on every face and pride was strong.
Many lessons were learned that night and the group has decided to try it again. On March 26th from 5:30 to 6:30 worried wait staff and eager cashiers will be waiting to bestow mounds of spaghetti to anyone wanting to help a good cause, Camp Ta-Kum-Ta. We hope you will come again.
Oh, the kids decided to charge $3.00 a plate, children under 5 eat free or families of 4 and up eat for $10.00. The teachers have encouraged them to accept donations. Thank you for your support!
