Anyone hearing the buzz lately is that the Superintendents Association is trying to change our school year by ending later in June and starting earlier in August! This means 2 week breaks instead of our usual 1 week breaks. So a few thoughts to think about...
*** The reality is that NOBODY has discussed this. One day of listening to the people whose school this is (these are) on 10/10 should have more meaningful input on this subject than just that day. Show us the data that says this is better!
*** The minuses are alarming... Who's idea was this? Does anyone see the problems with such changes just handed down to us tax payers? It seems like deals made ahead of time with the Association (union) regarding pay and benefits.
*** To keep students longer in June and earlier in August with heat temperatures higher and no air-conditioning ... is that really helping our students learn in a healthy environment?
*** Is the 2 week break going to have teachers coming in to school to help the students catch up on work & if so how much more will that be costing the taxpayers?
*** Working parents?? Who has asked us... we need to have child care those 2 weeks instead of one... there will not be the caliber of camps offered to us like in the summer.
*** If you have a high school student looking for a job... who is going to hire a student for 6 weeks?? No one!!!
*** If you play a sport... football, cross country, soccer... you have to start 2 weeks before school starts... SO... That means you will be starting around August 1st.... Can you say NO SUMMER!!!
*** What about the camps/programs that are run during the summer? They will be affected monetarily wise and students who help will be decreasing their summer bank account.
*** Summer is already too short in Vermont .... please voice your opinions soon or this will be a DONE DEAL and it will be too late to speak out!
