Have you ever wondered how Vermont's and New Hampshire's Native People raised food hundreds of years ago? For many years, archaeologists and anthropologists tried to find out by studying tiny remnants of crops as well as the remains of Native settlements. Little of substance has come of this multi-decade endeavor -- other than the belief that agriculture arrived in the area late, and was based on corn, beans and squash. Learn how a new perspective in American archaeology called "the Archaeology of the Human Experience," may help us to understand long-lost Abenaki food production.
This illustrated presentation will be supplemented by models of the cropping systems, displays of the 2014 harvest from the mound systems, as well as music, video and slides.
Discussion will follow the presentation.
This Presentation is a collaboration of the Vermont Archaeology Heritage Center and the Seeds of Renewal Project.
