Middlebury UndergrounD is psyched to present a lineup of West African-inspired music like Middlebury has never seen, on Saturday, Feb 21 at Town Hall Theater.

Headlining the evening, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars have one of the most remarkable stories in music. Decades ago, they were forced to flee their war torn home, to refugee camps in neighboring Guinea. But they persevered through music. Ten years and four albums later, they’ve evolved to become one of Africa’s most recognized bands. Now, their world is turned upside down... again. They’re refugees once more... this time in Providence, Rhode Island, while their home and family is being ravaged by Ebola.

This concert will help benefit the band, their families, and WeOwnTV, a non-profit working in Freetown, Sierra Leone to educate the community.

Opening for the All Stars, the "boundary-trampling high-octane hybrid" of Joe Driscoll and Sekou Kouyate lights up the stage with genre-bending style. Cee-Lo Green called Joe Driscoll "the gangsta with an iron lung," for his unique fusion of folk and hip-hop. Known as the “Jimi Hendrix of the Kora”… Sekou Kouyate wields his ancient Guinean harp like a modern day axe. Together their combined talents create an electrifying brew of hip-hop, funk, reggae and traditional African beats with an irresistible groove.

Joe speaks no French… Sekou speaks no English…

They let the music, speak for them.

Both bands have ties to the region... and record on the Charlotte, Vermont based record label, Cumbancha.

MUD Events is a new series featuring inspiring people doing extraordinary things – both inside Vermont and with ties to it. It’s a fresh, visionary forum that hands the microphone to local artists, entrepreneurs, and innovators who are deep in the real world.
