Hello everyone! I wanted to reach out to FPF about an event I am organizing at the University of Vermont. I am a first-year undergraduate student, but I also have called Burlington my home for all of my life.
The event is called Education Is Not a Crime. It stems from the worldwide campaign to raise awareness and show support for Baha'is of Iran who are denied a higher education.
Baha'i is the largest religious minority in Iran and since the religion was established in 1844, Baha'is have been prosecuted by the government. Currently it is a crime for Baha'is to attend University and so they started an underground higher education program in Iran.
The worldwide campaign "Education Is Not a Crime" is in conjunction with the film "To Light a Candle." This documentary sheds light on the underground education institute and other persecutions Baha'is have endured.
The event I am organizing will consist of a screening of the film, a panel discussion, and a space to record interview statements from the audience. The footage of the interviews will be uploaded to the campaign site to show the Iranian government that the world knows what they are doing to their citizens.
The event will be February 25th 7-9pm in the Davis Center Sugar Maple Ballroom. Here are links to the campaign site, the film trailer, and Facebook event page.
