Huntington Open Women's Land to Present at Sterling College Feb. 8

Huntington Open Women’s Land (HOWL) is soliciting ideas on shaping the future of the farming collective. Members of HOWL will be talking about the history of HOWL, the opportunities for new members, and what the next 30 years of HOWL might look like. The talk will be at Sterling College’s Brown Library Reading Room on Sunday, February 8, at 1 p.m.

HOWL is a 50-acre parcel with a house and a barn, half forested and half agricultural/meadow. A group of feminist women acquired HOWL in 1986 with the purpose of setting up a land trust for women. Therefore, there is no individual owner. It is a non-profit organization governed by a collective.

Until last year, the land had a working farm of about 35 sheep, as well as a few pigs and chickens. The farmers recently left to start their own, larger farm, so we are recruiting residents, interns, and collective members who are interested in farming, sustainable agriculture, ecological study, permaculture and/or land management. There are many opportunities to shape HOWL’s future. We will show you what HOWL is and what women have done at HOWL over the past 30 years. We would like to discuss the potential futures for HOWL with the audience. What can HOWL be for the next 30 years? We hope to inspire the audience to become involved in shaping HOWL's future vision for the land.

This talk is free and open to the public.
