Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am writing to invite you to attend a joint hearing of the Senate Economic Development Committee and the Senate Natural Resources Committee on Wednesday, January 21, from 9am-noon in the Senate Chambers at the State House.
The topic: Act 250’s 9(L) criterion and its potential impacts on planning and economic development
The meeting will begin with a briefing from Legislative Council on the law, and then we will take testimony from developers, members of planning commissions and select boards, regional development corporations, and interested citizens. It is my hope that we will hear from people on both sides of this issue—those who are concerned about or who oppose the criterion as currently written, as well as from those who support it.
You are always welcome to attend and simply listen, or if you want to sign up to speak at the meeting, please reply and provide me with the name of the person who will speak, his or her email, and a daytime phone number so that the committee assistant can follow up and schedule the testimony.
I realize that this meeting, occurring in the middle of a working day, in Montpelier, will not be convenient for many people who may nonetheless have an interest. You can submit written testimony to me, and I will make sure it is distributed to the committee members and made part of the official record of this joint meeting.
Last, I will note that this is the beginning of discussions on 9(L), not the end, so even if you cannot participate this week, I encourage you to stay in touch with your elected officials, as we will continue to work on this. Democracy works best when citizens are actively engaged in helping shape the laws we live by, so I encourage your participation in whatever way makes sense to you.
