On Monday, January 19, 2015 the Greater Bennington Peace & Justice Center and the Bennington Interfaith Council will be hosting an event to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will start at 6:00pm at the intersection of Rte 7 and Rte 9 (Bennington’s Four Corners) with a short candle light vigil. Participants will then gather at the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse at 108 School Street for refreshments and further programming.
During the vigil, excerpts from Dr. King’s “Beyond Vietnam – A Time to Break Silence” speech, given on April 4, 1967 at The Riverside Church, New York City, will be read. At 6:15 there will be a candlelight procession to the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse where participants will gather for fellowship, desserts and hot beverages. The main program will begin at 6:45with welcoming remarks and the showing of part one of the PBS documentary “Freedom Summer” at 7:00pm. The film covers the summer of 1964 where many people traveled to Mississippi, despite acts of violence, to engage in voter registration and create freedom schools. Part two of the film will be shown in February with a guest who was present at those events. Following the film there will be breakout groups for discussion regarding how the issues of the 1960s are still relevant in 2015.
