Riverside Trail Clearing Party

Past event
Dec 28, 2014

I've cleared dozens of trees fallen across the ski trails at Riverside Park this past month and I'm only half finished. It's slow going with only a bow saw and occasionally a rope, and this year has been extraordinary. Often while cutting up one tree I can see the next a few meters away up the trail. I've cleared the same stretches of trail repeatedly as new events bring down new trees and, frankly, I'm getting discouraged. There are two ways you could help: 1) shift downed limbs off the trail as you come to them. Don't step over them, pitch them into the woods, or grab the butt end and walk them far enough off the trail that the twiggy tips don't impinge. Don't wrestle whole trees or pull on anything that's hung up. Wherever saws or ropes would be an advantage leave it go, saws and ropes will be along to deal with those, but branches fall all the time, and need to be cleared continuously. Anyone can do that and it's a big help.

2) meet me Sunday noon (28 December 2014) in the parking lot with implements of destruction and let's clear the entire network. One major bole calls for a big saw + block & tackle or a chain hoist, but mostly what's needed is more hands and eyes to cover more trails and gain the upper hand. I've been losing ground lately: trees are falling faster than I can move them. Work gloves, eye protection and waterproof boots are advisable; bucksaws and rope would be handy. Considerable time and effort would be saved if someone wants to chainsaw that monster, but it isn't absolutely necessary. We won't do anything dangerous, or even terribly strenuous, but making all trails passable before real snow arrives would be wonderful.
