Green Mountain Stage Race Comes to Town, Again

On Sunday, September 1st, starting between about 9:10 and 9:30 in the morning, racers participating in the Green Mountain Stage Race will pass through Richmond for the third year running. The GMSR is a four-day, four-stage race that will take riders through some of Vermont's most scenic landscapes covering nearly 200 miles for many of the participants. It brings hundreds of racers (659 this year including the locals) from in and out of town who help fill the state's coffers each year. I hope a great many of them find there way to patronize the many businesses Richmond has to offer them.

The penultimate event, the road race, takes place on Sunday. The first wave (mine) starts at 8:10, and the last starts at 10:05 from Sugarbush North and heads to Middlesex before turning west on Route 2 and then onto Cochran Road, about 32 miles into the race.

There is a feed zone across from Cochran's, which will likely get congested with people lining the road to pass water bottles and food to racers. It's a great vantage point to see riders in all their lycra-ed glory behaving as if they were in the Tour de France! No fields of sunflowers but if you set up a bit further east you could get a picture of a lifetime of riders before a field of corn. Or, hang out on the Round Church green and cheer the cyclists as they parade onto Huntington Road.

Please be patient with the traffic congestion that may occur. We do our best to police ourselves in the race and we are admonished to behave with decorum. Nevertheless, it is likely that someone will drop a food bar wrapper by accident or on purpose. In either case, I apologize in if this occurs.

The last racers should be through town by about 11:45 based on start times.

Thank you in advance for cheering us on and for your patience with any inconveniences this race may cause.
