Managing a Sugarbush Through the Generations, with Mance Maple
Saturday, March 15th , 1-4 PM
Mance Family Tree Farm, 6151 Vermont Route 7A, Shaftsbury, Vermont 05262

Curious to see what it takes to produce international-award-winning maple syrup? Come see three generations of Mance's engage in the alchemy of boiling sap into syrup, then take a walk through the sugarbush to see just where it all starts. In just a short half-mile, the woods walk will cover both areas of historic and younger sugarbush. Discussions will highlight current management strategies (focused on bird-friendly practices and impact of a high deer population), modern tubing systems, and the historic practices used by past generations. We'll visit the site of the pre-1940 sugarhouse, the 1940-1979 sugarhouse and discuss more current technology in the 2024 sugarhouse. Warm up with coffee and hot chocolate, to accompany samples of syrup and sugar on snow. This event is hosted by Vermont Woodlands Association, Vermont Tree Farm, and Audubon Vermont. Mance Maple is a participating producer in Audubon Vermont's Bird-Friendly Maple program. Registration is encouraged.
