Understanding Vermont's New Literacy Law

Mar 6, 2025, 5 to 6:30 PM

In this workshop, Ms. Lindley will explain how scientific research over the last four decades have shown nearly every student can be taught to read with effective instruction in the five components of reading. Starting with the brain, she then describes teaching methods that both educate every student as well as target literacy gaps. With the passage of the new VT literacy law, Act 139, Dr. Dorfman shares what teachers and parents can expect for changes in school protocols, and recommends best practices that can fulfill the law's intent: to teach all of Vermont's students to read. The workshop includes time for questions to deepen participants' knowledge of how students learn to read as well as understand the potential impact of Act 139, VT's new literacy law.
