Some English words only have a single meaning, while others have many. In its online dictionary, Merriam-Webster records twenty separate senses for the common word 'life,' with some of these having as many as four subsenses. What does this mean, and what do they mean? Windsor resident and Merriam-Webster editor Michael Metivier will use the entry for 'life' to talk about what dictionaries do (and do not do), how to read them (and how not to read them) and shed some light on lexicography.
