Let's Talk About Sewing Patterns!

Past event
Feb 20, 2025, 6 to 8 PM

Curious about how to use a sewing pattern? Want the low-down on how to tackle the sizing, vocab, and instructions? Want to learn a little bit about doing some basic pattern hacks and alterations? Then this is the workshop for you! This is meant to be a quick run down of everything sewing pattern related, geared towards the beginner, but more experienced sewists are welcome too! We will spend the workshop looking at several different sewing patterns, including both independent, commercial, pdf patterns, and even talk about pattern books (Japanese pattern books, Tauko magazine, etc.). We'll learn how to read the back to find what size you are and what materials you need, and we'll also dig into the body of the pattern, going over basic symbols and vocabulary so that you can hopefully get started with confidence! If there is time, we can go over some more specific questions that folks bring in, which can include basic pattern alterations.

This is a lecture-based workshop that will be geared towards question-answering and discussion. We won't actually be making anything, but this will hopefully start you on your way to using a sewing pattern! This is geared towards newbies, but more advanced students are welcome - if you are interested in more advanced patterning topics (hacks and alterations), please check out Let's Talk About Patterns: Hacks and Alterations which will be on March 20th.
