The Safety Team is a 501(c)3 non-profit offering ESD workshops that include simple, powerful, and effective personal protection strategies that are easy to understand and remember. Participants learn to recognize predatory behavior before it becomes a threat, diffuse it verbally, if possible, and apply effective physical self-defense techniques, if necessary. Taught for women by women.
All fitness levels are welcome! No prior experience is required! Open to girls and women 12 and up. (12 -13 year olds need to be accompanied by a female parent or guardian) 14-18 year olds need a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.
Workshop Description: This 2.5-hour Introduction to Empowerment Self-Defense workshop utilizes both large and small-group instruction. By adhering to a 5:1 student-to-instructor ratio, The Safety Team's trauma-responsive trainings focus on boundary setting, affirmative consent, and relevant sexual assault information, as well as the mental and physical skills of Empowerment Self-Defense.
The overarching goal of these large-group sessions is to help women discover their collective voice, address victim-blaming by redirecting the responsibility for all assaults onto the perpetrators, improve women's sense of power and control, and, as a result, reduce the likelihood of sexual assault and violence.
This workshop fosters a sense of empowerment and the ability to make proactive choices regarding one's safety. The resulting confidence is beneficial for women of all ages. These skills are particularly important for young women as they go through middle and high school, head off to college, and experience new environments.
