The Select Board and volunteer LPWG continue to investigate the possibilities for The Town of South Hero should voters approve the purchase of the property at 275 Route 2, South Hero. Here is a review of the details: the size of the parcel is seventy-five (75) acres, the cost is $440,000 or $5,867 per acre, and it includes State permitted septic for 5,320 gallons per day wastewater capacity.
The Town could take twenty (20) years to build out a full vision plan so that any tax impact would be thoughtfully planned to not over-burden the Town’s taxpayers. The parcel has room for a municipal center to include a new Fire House, Rescue Squad facility, and a Town Office. Recreational opportunities would exist such as expanded walking trails with a nature path connecting to the Folsom School and Community Center. Most importantly, the Town would be able to preserve this parcel while controlling the growth and use of the land. Our community would continue to be involved in all aspects during the planning dialog.
The money needed to buy the future Town Center property can come from private tax-deductible contributions to the Town or from a low rate municipal loan. Our Town Clerk continues to research the best funding option. Details on this and the estimated tax impact it might have will be available by the January 27, 2015 Public Forum.
What does all of this mean to South Hero residents? To help address questions and continue to receive community input there will be a Public Forum held on Tuesday, January 27th, 7:00 pm at the Town Office. In addition, a presentation, with an opportunity for questions and answers, will be held during Town Meeting, Saturday February 28, 2015 leading up to a Town vote on March 2, 2015.
