Each year during income tax season, the AARP offers free tax preparation for everyone, regardless of age or income level. There are some limits on the complexity of tax preparation.

Appointments can be made by calling either:

You must live and work in Vermont to receive service.

Prior to the appointment time, please fill out an intake form, available at the MCL Help Desk during regular Library Hours. Bring your completed intake form together with all the required documents (see below).

The following personal documents are required:

Photo ID
Copies of last year's federal and state tax returns
Social Security cards for yourself, your spouse, and all dependents
Income statements
W-2 from employer
Social Security SSA-1099 (statement with pink Box 5)
All other: 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B, 1099-MISC, 1099-R, HSA form
Unemployment compensation statements
Dependent day care information– provider name, address, SS or EIN numbner
Personal check showing routing and accounting numbers for direct debit or deposit, or documentation of savings acount numbers
2024-25 local property tax bill
Health care document: 1095-A
Names, social security numbers, and dollar amounts of income for all wage earners living in your home
All IRS and VT tax department letters (if received in 2024)
If you are filing jointly, both parties will need to be present to sign
