July 2024 flooding along the Lewis Creek in Starksboro: Strategies for building back better.

In July 2024 Starksboro was one of several Vermont communities that experienced flooding impacts from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl.  In this presentation, Kristen Underwood will share monitoring data that characterize the magnitude of the July event, review the geologic and land use conditions that led to flooding vulnerabilities, and illustrate how floodwater access to conserved floodplains helped to dissipate the energy of this flood and reduce downstream impacts.  She will also review various mitigation strategies that can be chosen to avoid or lessen damages in future floods including examples from within and outside of the Lewis Creek watershed.

Kristen Underwood is a Research Faculty member in the UVM Dept of Civil & Environmental Engineering and previously worked as a technical advisor to Lewis Creek Association performing geomorphic assessments and advising on restoration and conservation projects in the Lewis Creek watershed.

The Starksboro CC will have a light supper available. Although Kristen Underwood will be talking mostly about Starksboro, the talk may be of interest to Monkton residents also.
